The GCSHSD’s Independent Writers Coalition, a group of self-identified writers who meet weekly to edit, read, and write, will be holding their second literary reading, The Living Room, on Friday, May 29th in the Writing Center. Students from IWC, along with selected student/teacher writers, will be reading their works (short fiction, personal narrative, poetry and more). Snacks will be served at 5:30. Reading starts at 6:00.
All students applying to take the summer precalculus course must notify Mr. Rossi by email by Friday May 1st at the latest. If you’ve already sent an email, you have already formally applied and don’t need to send another. Please include in your email at least a one-sentence statement of goals for taking the course (for example, “I would like to take Calculus as a Senior”) The course will start Thursday June 11 and last until Friday July 3. Count on at least 6 hours a day, each weekday.
Hibakusha is coming to GCS! The survivors of the WWII, atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are collectively called Hibakusha, which means explosion-affected people. A small group are coming to give their testimonials followed by a Q & A, to inform and further their mission to abolish nuclear weapons forever. It will take place this Tuesday from 1:15-2:00 in the MPR for 9th & 10th grade. Those who have a 12:00 class will be dismissed at 12:50 to get lunch before the program.
Students should come with some questions in mind and with a little prep to understand the gravity of what these people have been through. Their advanced age and experiences demand mindful respect.
There will be a panel on diversity in literature after school, at 5:30, on Tuesday the 5th. There will be publishers, authors, and librarians. It will be organized and moderated by the Library Advisory Board, and sponsored by the Diversity Council and the Grace Church School Book Club. Diverse literature includes bestsellers like, Pretty Little Liars, The Fault in Our Stars, and many other great titles, like the Hunger Games and the Mortal Instruments. Please join us for a great night.
