Gremlins Face Avenues in the Semi-Finals

As everyone knows, GCS is a work in progress. From our academic building to our sports teams we continue to grow and strive as a community and student body. Continuing with that trend, our GCS Gremlin Soccer team began playing at the varsity level this year. The Gremlins faced a whole new division with different schools and more competition.

Through out the season, the Gremlins faced triumphant victories and some sad close calls that quickly turned into loses. However, the Gremlins season ended incredibly well, with a well deserved advancement to the semi-finals.

Across the season, the players were incredibly content with themselves and their achievement. I got the chance to interview some of the players from this seasons Varsity Soccer team. They explained to me how intense their practice schedule was. Throughout the week, the Gremlins practiced every day. They had once a week conditioning periods and video reviews, where they watched and learned new plays. I had the opportunity to talk to some of the players on the team, they all had a lot of things to say. In regards to how their coaches treated them and if their coaches met their needs, Miguel Duahajre said, “I really enjoyed my soccer season! My coaches are super awesome and I really feel like I can talk to them about anything.” The coaches on the Varsity soccer team, all played soccer previously. They share a love of the sport with all the players on the team in a very genuine way. They take their job seriously and they are incredibly focused on transferring the passion and live of the sport that they have, to all of the Varsity athletes.

In the past, athletes at Grace have really enjoyed their coaches and that enthusiasm has certainly continued with the growth of the athletic program. Adjectives that were used to describe the coaches for the GCS soccer team included ‘fun,’ ‘talented,’ ‘helpful,’ ‘always willing to help me out,’ ‘enjoyable,’ ‘always make me feel good.’

In a glance, we saw how the GCS Gremlins shared their enthusiasm and love of the sport and turned that into winning while playing at a higher level. We are all excited to see what their passions and talents will lead to in the future, as they continue to strive and create new acheivements in the greater years to come. Winston Simones, a previous member of the GCS Gremlin Soccer team spoke to me about his transition from the soccer team to the GCS Squash team, “Although I’m no longer on the field with them, I always feel a special bond with all my soccer brothers. That bond will last forever, I think, because we all grew up so much and learned so many things, being on the team together for a season. Yeah, just a season– Kind of unbelievable that I was only apart of the team for one year. It seems like I knew my coaches and teammates forever.”
