Spring Sports Preview

The Gremlins wrapped up a successful winter season, in which the Girls Basketball team made it to the second round of the state tournament. We’re now looking forward to the spring season filled with promise and potential for more success.

This spring season, our athletics department offers baseball, softball, tennis, and track-and-field.  Baseball and Softball have been practicing these last two weeks gearing up for real game action. The teams both play at East River Fields which is really close to school so its easily accessible for practices. I asked Ms. Armijos, Athletics Director, what her opinion of the spring season was.  She said, “We get to go to Penn Relays (for Track-and-Field) and compete against other schools around the country, so that makes the spring season unique. Last season, track-and-field did very well at the Penn Relays placing in the relay last year.” She also added that playing outdoor sports is unique after a long, cold winter season.

All of these teams compete in the PSAA League against other schools around the city. The PSAA is the Private Schools Athletic Association, so our school plays many competitive independent schools around New York.  As well as the Penn Relays, track-and-field also goes to the Gotham Games and other inter-city meets. The tennis is team is hopeful about playing a match at Arthur Ashe stadium this spring, after last season’s match was rained out. Baseball and Softball are playing at the varsity level for the second year and are looking to have strong seasons. So as tryouts wrap up and the season gets underway, there is a lot to look forward to during the spring season. Get outside, enjoy the warm(er) weather, and cheer on your Gremlins!
