GCS Dance Ensemble Holds Annual Concert
On April 20 and 21, the GCS Dance Ensemble held their annual concert at Tuttle Hall on the 86 campus. This year’s program, Agents of Funk, Prophets of Change, focused on Social Justice. Through their choreography, the dancers expressed the issues they cared about. There were dances choreographed by David Dorfman in partnership with David Dorfman dance company and also student choreographed dances. The dances were set to music ranging from the Beatles to Sly and the Family Stone. Ms. Pommis, the dance coach, was happy with how the show went: “I believe this was our strongest performance ever. With two Ensembles, twenty-eight members total and fifteen pieces in the program, Agents of Funk, Prophets of Change, had something for everyone!”
Kate Bonham Walsh 18’ is one of the dance captains and seniors on the ensemble and she was happy without the show went. “I think the dance show went really well. We put a lot of work into it especially during tech and I am really proud of the work we did and the other dancers are too.” One of the most memorable and emotional dances of the night was choreographed by Kate. It was titled KITASHSEWMAI and was dedicated to the Class of 2018 Dean, Mr. Rufer. “I heard the song ‘Rivers and Roads’ a year ago and the lyrics were meaningful since we are leaving this year. I created a piece to show the audience what it meant to leave a place that is considered home. It was the last moment the dance seniors had together,” Walsh said. She added, ”When I found out we could dedicate dances, he was my first thought and I named it after the acronym that only him and the seniors would know what it meant.”
Georgia Ossorguine agreed with the sentiment that it was their strongest show of the four years she had been here: “I have been in dance ensemble for all four years of high school,” Ossorguine said, “I think it was our strongest concert yet dance wise and also the meaning behind our choreography was the most powerful.”
