How does a four-person school club transform into the fourth-ranked debate team in New York State? It starts by refusing to be intimidated by the giants. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Just one year ago, the Grace Church Debate Team was a skeleton crew, rostered by just four passionate members: Marko T. \u201828, Ophelia S. 28, Vienna V. \u201828, and Preston C. \u201828. Recognizing the raw potential, the school brought on coach Emma Golden to spearhead an ambitious overhaul. What followed was a masterclass in rapid evolution: within 12 months, a dormant program exploded into a formidable 15-member powerhouse, culminating in a jaw-dropping performance in April, when Grace secured two of three state championship spots in Public Forum Debate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To put this success into perspective, a handful of Grace students had to out-think, out-talk, and out-perform massive institutional programs boasting hundreds of members and legions of coaches. For example, Brooklyn Technical High School has more members on their debate team than the Grace class of 2026. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This school year, the Grace team debated a range of topics: from end-to-end encryption to Chinese mineral extraction, from regulating sports betting to presidential overreach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Grace Church’s debate revolves around a culture of fun and passion. A debater must cut \u201ccards\u201d before a tournament; the fundamental unit of evidence in competitive debate, consisting of a word-for-word quote from an authoritative source, paired with a debater-written summary (\u201cTag\u201d) and a concise formal citation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Avery O. \u201828 describes: \u201cI realized that when you make your own cards, you just go deeper into this topic; not only do you understand the material better, but it’s just more reliable.\u201d This commitment to original research, rather than relying on shared briefs or recycled evidence, helps Grace students create their own knowledge, rather than regurgitate the old\u2014values also instilled by our History Department. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The debate team\u2019s character, however, isn\u2019t built on research alone. It\u2019s built on a paradox the team itself has learned to navigate: the tension between independence and collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Henri F. \u201828, reflecting on the team\u2019s culture, puts it bluntly: \u201cWhat the Grace team does so well is also its greatest weakness, which is that they allow so much independence within the debate. Everyone is their own unit\u2026the collaboration isn’t really there.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
That same independence is what gives partnerships room to develop unconventional styles, approaches that wouldn\u2019t survive in a more regimented practice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ms. Golden, Grace\u2019s coach, has made a quiet bet, one that has paid off: that a team of distinct voices, occasionally fumbling toward coordination, produces better debaters than a team of synchronized clones. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
While Ms. Golden acknowledges successful individual partnerships, she is candid that cohesion among the larger team is a work in progress. \u201cIt is easy to treat debate like an individual sport or at least just you and your immediate partner,\u201d she says, \u201cbut there’s so much knowledge that can be gleaned from thinking like one larger brain.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
If research is the foundation and independence is the structure, then oration is the roof. Artificial intelligence can instantly write essays, make cards, or prepare speeches in ways that many humans cannot. At the end of the day, though, AI cannot speak\u2014AI cannot debate with pathos. The students must get up and emphatically convince a room of their peers and judges that their position is correct. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a season where every debater on the circuit has access to the same large language models, the same research databases, and increasingly similar case structures, the differentiator is no longer what you say; it\u2019s how you say it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Looking ahead, Avery sees a clear trajectory: \u201cI think the future of the Grace team is bigger and better,\u201d she said. \u201cWe’ve made a lot of progress so far, and we’ve expanded our team. We’re currently the fourth-best team in the state, which I think is extremely impressive. And I think that we’re going to continue to expand the program with the incoming freshman class.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Grace Church Debate has not only survived the transition from a four-person club to a state powerhouse; it has redefined what it means to win on its own terms. The giants of the circuit officially have company at the top. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
