This June, Grace\u2019s student-athletes competed at the Track and Field Nike Nationals. The nine students who competed were Captain Owen A. \u201825, Captain Wesley T. \u201826, Captain Jayanth C. \u201825, Miles F. \u201827,  Oscar P. \u201827, Captain Hallie R. \u201825, Captain Chloe R. \u201826, Taylor G. \u201828, and Herschel T. \u201828. The athletes flew to Oregon earlier this summer to participate in the event from Jun. 19 to Jun. 22.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWalking into Hayward Field for that first time and just seeing its sheer enormity and the amount of people, it was honestly one of the most incredible, exciting, and nerve-racking moments of my life,\u201d said Miles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coach Jelani Knight echoed the sentiment about the awe the team felt upon entering the famous field and participating in such a momentous event. \u201cThe kids had a great experience,\u201d Coach Knight said. \u201cThey really loved it, they will forever remember it. One of the student athletes, Hallie, framed her jersey and her number from the meet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coach Knight highlighted how the athletes rose to the occasion, taking advantage of this incredible opportunity and leaving it all on the track. He was impressed by all the athletes who attended and by their passion and dedication to the sport. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Nationals, the Grace Track and Field team set the record for the fastest boys\u2019 4 x 200 in Grace history. The record-setting students were Wes, Oscar, Owen, and Jayanth. This accomplishment exemplifies the grit and determination of all the Grace athletes who fought their hardest even under the pressure of competing against some of the best runners in the United States. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The team not only competed on one of the biggest track stages in the world, but they did so in a complete downpour. Coach Knight was so proud of his team’s accomplishments in Eugene, Oregon, and hopes  to go back next year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was a privilege to get to compete alongside my closest teammates as well as getting the chance to travel all the way to Oregon to experience for myself and see the countless other track athletes compete from around the country,\u201d said Hershal. \u201cI am proud of myself and my teammates for persevering not just through this competition but through the whole track season.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Simply qualifying for the Track and Field Nationals is a massive achievement, one which the vast majority of high school runners do not accomplish. This event was an incredible milestone for the Grace Varsity Track and Field team and one that Coach Knight and the rest of the team will build on this coming season. We hope to see them back in Oregon next year!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
