The first thing you should understand about \u201cFences\u201d is that it is very much a filmed play. The scenes rarely stray from a few essential settings and consist primarily of dialogue amongst the characters. An adaptation of August Wilson’s play, director Denzel Washington kept the movie as minimalist as possible. \u201cFences\u201d is a small, intimate story about Troy Maxson, a working-class African-American father trying to support his family in the 1950s. <\/span><\/p>\n This film speak volumes about how far the Black community had come in overcoming prejudices by the 1950s, but how far they still had to go. It talks about familial roles and the sacrifices we must make to support one another in times of adversity. <\/span><\/p>\n Personally, I found it incredibly difficult to sympathize with the main character Troy. \u00a0His \u2018tough love\u2019 approach to raising his son seems more out of spite than love, and the despicable things he does to wife, Rose, cannot be overlooked. Troy\u2019s character, though thrifty and practical, was conceited by his economic power over the family. When faced with conflict, Troy in unable to communicate in a way other than speaking in baseball terms, reflecting his highly egotistical mindset. He loves to hear himself speak, and does not show Rose half of the respect she deserves. <\/span>
\n\u201cFences\u201d definitely will not appeal to everyone. If you are looking for non-stop action and excitement, this is not your movie. But, if you are looking for some incredible acting and a well-written script, then \u201cFences\u201d is right for you. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
