Fifteen years ago, one of the most popular television shows of all time premiered on AMC. To this day, it is widely considered one of the best series of all time, in regards to both style and content. From the pace to the character development, \u201cBreaking Bad\u201d created a new expectation for what the best television show of all time should offer. While some critics believe<\/a> that the suspenseful action sequences are the reason for the show\u2019s <\/em>success, it seems that a combination of writing, acting, and cinematography is the real foundation for its popularity.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eli N. \u201823, one of many \u201cBreaking Bad\u201d <\/em>fans at Grace, explained that his favorite thing about the show is how \u201cthe story fits tightly together. It\u2019s linear, but at times you\u2019ll have a cold open that happens five episodes in the future and every episode gets closer to that action.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This method of building suspense is one of the show\u2019s many strengths. The lead-up to the events of season two, Episode 13 (\u201cABQ\u201d) of the series occurs over a four episode arc, culminating with a tragic plane crash. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eli explained how \u201cin one episode you see a plane explode midair, and then you see why that happens in the next episode. The slow building action that is hinted at makes the story very seamless.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This seamless writing and directing style helps establish suspense for the viewer, provoking viewers to continue watching to see what happens next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the suspenseful writing, the character development contributes greatly to the show\u2019s stylistic perfection. Eli simply said, \u201cThere are memorable characters. Everything is sort of realistic. Characters make mistakes.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In regards to the cinematography, film major Declan G. \u201823 pointed out how the show\u2019s cinematography is generally quite simple and minimalistic: \u201cIt puts more emphasis on the characters in a way that brings you in much closer to the action.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The camera work is part of what makes the show so entertaining to viewers. Fans are on the edge of their seats when Michael Slovis, the show\u2019s cinematography director, pulls out one of his unique shots, whether it be a beautiful timelapse of the New Mexico sky or a closeup image of a fly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While some people believe that the \u201cbest\u201d television show is not quantifiable, Lucia D. \u201824 echoed Eli\u2019s sentiments. The way the show diverges from the typical antihero stereotype stood out to her:\u201cAt first you\u2019re on Walt\u2019s side and very gradually he shifts, and you don\u2019t even notice until he\u2019s a terrible person, and you can\u2019t root for him anymore. It\u2019s different from other shows with an antihero because you\u2019re not rooting for him.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Declan said that for him, \u201ca well-written character can be subjective. In \u2018Breaking Bad\u2019, [Walter White] is a character who despite all the bad choices he\u2019s made, can pull the audience\u2019s support and win their understanding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to Walter White\u2019s atypical character development, Lucia commented on how the show\u2019s \u201ccinematography, music, and acting are all really good. It wouldn\u2019t be as good if it had the same plot without the visuals.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And what\u2019s a good show without its diehard fans? During the show’s airing everyone was obsessed with the \u201cBreaking Bad\u201d characters but some took it to new levels. In fact, Grace student and diehard \u201cBreaking Bad\u201d fan Cyrus M. \u201824 made the ultimate commitment \u2013 shaving his head bald to dress up as Walter White for Halloween. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBreaking Bad\u201d <\/em>is considered the greatest television show, according to the Grace community, and people around the world seem to echo that sentiment. From the show\u2019s gripping suspense to its masterful character development and cinematography, \u201cBreaking Bad\u201d is considered a masterpiece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
