{"id":1525,"date":"2018-03-13T11:29:58","date_gmt":"2018-03-13T16:29:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gracegazette.org\/wordpress1\/?p=1525"},"modified":"2018-04-03T12:23:52","modified_gmt":"2018-04-03T17:23:52","slug":"black-panther-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gracegazette.org\/wordpress1\/black-panther-review\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Black Panther&#8221; Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBlack Panther\u201d was released on February 16 and has shattered records, being hailed as \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/features\/black-panther-is-groundbreaking-but-its-shuri-who-could-change-the-world\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">groundbreaking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d and \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/movies\/news\/black-superheroes-matter-why-black-panther-is-revolutionary-w509105\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">revolutionary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d \u201cBlack Panther\u201d has grossed over <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/movies\/?id=marvel2017b.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 billion dollars worldwide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and has received more fan support than any other movie in recent years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The movie takes place in the fictional nation of Wakanda which is said to be somewhere in central Africa.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thousands of years ago, Wakanda was hit by a meteor of vibranium, <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1526 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/gracegazette.org\/wordpress1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/black-panther-trailer-300x146.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gracegazette.org\/wordpress1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/black-panther-trailer-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gracegazette.org\/wordpress1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/black-panther-trailer-768x373.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gracegazette.org\/wordpress1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/black-panther-trailer-1024x497.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/gracegazette.org\/wordpress1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/black-panther-trailer-512x249.jpg 512w, https:\/\/gracegazette.org\/wordpress1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/black-panther-trailer.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>an incredibly strong and conductive metal that also happens to be what Captain America&#8217;s shield is made of. The meteor allowed Wakandans to become technologically advanced over all Western nations. The traditional Wakandans thought that they should hide vibranium from the outside world in order to protect their own citizens and culture. As a result, they put up an invisibility shield that allowed them to live in peace for thousands of years. The decision to take down the invisibility shield and provide foreign aid is central to the plot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The story explores the wonders of Wakanda, in which colonialism and white supremacy never affected society. The director Ryan Coogler said in \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SNHc2PxY8lY\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notes on the Scene<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d that one of the main story arcs that he tackled was dealing with traditionalists versus innovators in Wakanda. While Wakanda is new in technology, it is grounded in tradition. The story deals with how its leader, T&#8217;challa, navigates the road between tradition and innovation while also dealing with a former Wakandan exiled to America.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The movie is a light-hearted and culturally nuanced take on a classic political tale. T\u2019challa, the king of Wakanda and legendary \u201cBlack Panther,\u201d is the main character of the movie and is played by Chadwick Boseman. T\u2019Challa\u2019s little sister, Shuri, played by <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm4004793\/?ref_=tt_cl_t7\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Letitia Wright<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is Wakanda\u2019s equivalent of James Bond\u2019s Q. Shuri also acts as comedic relief throughout the film, often interjecting with jokes. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm2143282\/?ref_=tt_cl_t3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lupita Nyong&#8217;o<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> plays a Wakanadan spy who is also the love interest of T\u2019challa. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm1775091\/?ref_=tt_cl_t4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Danai Gurira<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> plays the head of the Dura Milas, an all-female security unit chosen to protect the king or queen of \u00a0Wakanda. Michael B. Jordan plays Erik Killmonger, the villain of the story that grew up in America. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBlack Panther\u201d is a great movie that embraces the culture of Africa in a way that resonates with every viewer. Hopefully the success of \u201cBlack Panther\u201d will endure in the minds of Hollywood executives and we will see more great movies like \u201cBlack Panther\u201d that embrace and celebrate a diverse range of cultures. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now it is time to give \u201cBlack Panther\u201d a Grace Potatoes score. This is the the first movie that has received a Grace Potatoes rating, so here is how it works. We poll the Grace students who saw the film and ask them how much they like it on a scale from 1 to 10. Then we average their ratings and convert that number to a percentage.
